    50th Anniversary throughout Hall of Fame Weekend

    The International Boxing Hall of Fame announced today Sugar Ray Leonard and members of the legendary 1976 U.S. Olympic Boxing Team will reunite in Canastota for the 50th anniversary of the Montreal Olympic Games during the Hall of Fame Weekend and will collectively lead the Parade of Champions as Grand Marshal on Sunday, June 14th.

    In addition to Leonard, gold medal winners Michael Spinks and Leo Randolph; silver medal winner Charles Mooney and team member Chuck Walker will be attending.

    “The Hall of Fame is beyond thrilled to welcome the iconic 1976 U.S. Olympic Boxing Team to ‘Boxing’s Hometown’ to commemorate the landmark 50th anniversary and relive their Olympic glory,” said Hall of Fame Executive Director Edward Brophy. “What a moment it will be when Sugar Ray Leonard and his Olympic teammates lead the Parade of Champions through downtown Canastota.”

    One of the most storied teams in Olympic boxing history, the 1976 U.S. team produced seven medals, including five gold (Leonard, M.Spinks, Randolph, Leon Spinks and Howard Davis Jr.), 1 silver (Mooney) and 1 bronze (John Tate). Team members Louis Curtis, Davey Lee Armstrong, Clinton Jackson and Chuck Walker rounded out the legendary squad.

    “Words can’t fully describe the pride and joy I felt being part of that incredible Olympic team that brought home five Olympic gold medals. To have the honor of serving as Grand Marshal alongside my amazing teammates for this 50th anniversary of the 1976 Olympic Games is truly one of the greatest feelings I could experience. You don’t know the impact this has made on my life, thank you so much,” said Hall of Famer Sugar Ray Leonard.

    The Parade of Champions, set for Sunday, June 14th at 12 noon, will pass through the streets of Canastota. In addition to the grand marshal and boxing stars, the parade will also feature pageant caliber bands, drum & bugle corps, pipe bands, floats and community organizations.

    In addition to the Parade of Champions, the Olympic team will be celebrated throughout the June 11-14th Hall of Fame Weekend including the Banquet of Champions on Saturday, June 13th. Many events will take place in Canastota and nearby Turning Stone Resort Casino throughout the four-day celebration including ringside talks, fist casting, fight night, 5K race / fun run, boxing autograph card show and induction ceremony.

    Class of 2026 inductees set to be in Canastota include boxers Gennadiy “GGG” Golovkin, Nigel Benn, Antonio Tarver, Naoko Fujioka and Jackie Nava; trainer / cutman Russ Anber, physician Dr. Flip Homansky and journalist Kevin Iole.

    Posthumous inductees to be honored include referee Frank Cappuccino, trainer / cut man Jimmy Glenn, broadcaster Alex Wallau and welterweight and middleweight star Jimmy Clabby.

    In addition to the new honorees and the 1976 Olympians, an impressive array of boxing stars from around the world are set to be in Canastota including Marco Antonio Barrera, Mikey Garcia, Christy Martin, Erik Morales, Timothy Bradley Jr., Winky Wright, Jim Lampley, Kelly “The Ghost” Pavlik, Vinny Paz, “Jesse” James Leija, Jorge Linares, Kenny Bayless, Ray Mercer, Ruben Olivares, Eric “Butterbean” Esch, Micky Ward and many others.
