Former Berekum Chelsea goalkeeping coach Eric Amponsah has shared how he was appointed to join the Sudan national team.

Before his appointment, Amponsah spent his career with the Berekum-based club, competing in the Ghana Premier League.

In an interview with Kessben TV, Amponsah revealed that he secured the job thanks to recommendations from several prominent figures, even though he had never met Sudan’s head coach, James Kwasi Appiah, who initially had someone else in mind for the role.

“I’m thankful to Kwasi Appiah because, despite already having a preferred choice, it was a tough decision to make. Four people, including his assistant Ignatius Osei-Fosu and his wife, recommended me to him,” Amponsah said. “I received a text from Kwasi Appiah saying I had been recommended to him by these individuals.”

Amponsah also praised Kwasi Appiah for giving him the freedom to work independently while offering support and guidance when needed.

“Whenever you’re working with him, he allows you to work on your own. He sits down with you to discuss issues and helps you if you face problems. He essentially manages you to become a better version of yourself,” he added.

Amponsah got the opportunity after Fatawu Dauda vacated the position to join the Black Stars. His experience proved vital during Sudan’s 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, as the team secured qualification with four clean sheets in six games.
