    El sudafricano ex campeón mundial superpluma de la AMB y la FIB, Brian Mitchell, de Sudáfrica, fue honrado con un cinturón verde y oro del WBC.

    Durante su carrera profesional realizada entre 1981-1995 con un récord de 45 triunfos (21 KOs) 1 derrota y 3 empates , Mitchell nunca pudo tener una oportunidad por el cinturón del WBC debido a la política del apartheid que existía en Sudáfrica.

    En septiembre de 1986 Mitchell ganó el campeonato superpluma de la AMB al panameño Alfredo Layne en Sudáfrica , Mitchell fue campeon por cerca de 5 años.

    Mitchell quiso combatir por el titulo del WBC ante Azumah Nelson pero esa gran pelea nunca se materializó.

    Tenia 12 años fue la primera vez que quien le escribe asistió a una pelea de campeonato mundial en julio de 1987 en el Gimnasio Nuevo Panamá (Roberto Durán) Brian Mitchel defendió su titulo ante el retador local Francisco “Rocky΅ Fernandez logrando retenerlo por KOT en 14 rounds.

    Comienza la convención anual 62 del WBC en Hamburgo, Alemania
