Street Sense Organisation has presented 1,000 specialised reflective vests to the Ghana Police Service to enhance the visibility and safety of personnel deployed to manage traffic on the country’s roads.

The donation, made in Accra yesterday, formed part of the organisation’s support for the Police Service’s Traffic Technology (TRAFFITECH GH) initiative and was aimed at reducing casualties involving traffic personnel, particularly at night when visibility was limited.

Presenting the items, the National Coordinator of Street Sense Organisation, Mr Samson Oddoye, said the donation was part of the organisation’s continued efforts to support the Ghana Police Service, particularly the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD), in promoting road safety.

He said Street Sense was a local non-governmental organisation promoting safe driving behaviour.

He added that the organisation, whose slogan was “Safety for Life”, worked with the National Road Safety Authority to educate the public and support post-crash care. The organisation also worked with the National Ambulance Service, Ghana Fire Service and Red Cross to strengthen public education and support post-crash care and road safety efforts.

Mr Oddoye explained that the organisation had made similar donations to the Police Service.

According to him, the reflective colours and directional markings were selected to improve the visibility of traffic personnel.

He noted that the orange colour provided high visibility, while the yellow and white markings complemented road markings.

Mr Oddoye stressed that road safety required the participation of motorists, pedestrians and other road users, urging them to remain alert.

Receiving the donation on behalf of the Police Service, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mr Christian Tetteh Yohuno, expressed appreciation to Street Sense for supporting the MTTD with the reflective vests.

He disclosed that more than 3,000 police personnel were deployed daily across the country to manage traffic, making visibility important for their safety.

The IGP explained that traffic officers were exposed to harsh weather conditions and risks from motorists while performing their duties.

He said the donation was timely as the Police Service prepared to roll out TRAFFITECH GH on November 1, 2026, to improve traffic management and enforcement.

Mr Yohuno urged motorists, particularly commercial drivers, to drive cautiously, avoid speeding and remain attentive to other road users.

The IGP also appealed to the media to help intensify public education on road safety and communicate the need for motorists to comply with traffic regulations.

Also speaking, a former Chief Executive Officer of the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, Dr Opoku Ware Ampomah, said road safety should be a concern for the entire society and not the Police Service alone.

He disclosed that Ghana recorded almost 2,950 deaths from road traffic crashes last year, while about 14,700 people sustained injuries.

Dr Ampomah, who had handled post-crash cases as a plastic surgeon, noted that many victims were people in their productive years, including breadwinners.

He stressed that the consequences of road crashes extended beyond victims to families, and therefore urged all road users to obey traffic regulations, work collectively to ensure safer roads and ensure that every journey ended safely.
