Activist and private legal practitioner, Oliver Barker-Vormawor, has declared that Ghana is already in a state of emergency due to the devastating impact of illegal mining, locally known as “galamsey,” but the citizenry awaits the government’s actions on the matter.

Speaking at the #StopGalamsey protest in Accra on September 22, 2025, Barker-Vormawor called on the government to immediately declare a state of emergency to address the crisis.

In a video snippet shared by 3news on X, he signaled that citizens are closely watching how the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) government handles the issue that has plagued the nation.

He emphasised that the Ghanaians are in anticipation of the government’s decisive action on the menace that is fast eroding vegetation covers and polluting water bodies.

“The critical question is no longer whether there is a crisis, but how the government chooses to deal with it, which is what the people are demanding,” he stated.
