Supporters of Cristiano Ronaldo have descended on Wayne Rooney, accusing the English legend of making a U-turn to get into the good books of the Portuguese icon.
Wayne Rooney in 2022 said Ronaldo was “being a distraction at Manchester United” and backed the decision of Manager Erik Ten Hagg to kick him out of the team.
Ronaldo responded in a Piers Morgan interview by labeling Rooney as a jealous former teammate, but the English legend has since clarified in a recent interview that his remarks came from a place of love for the Portuguese star.
“People think I hate (Ronaldo). I love him. I think he’s a genius, and what he does is amazing. I think that just because I say Messi is better than Ronaldo, people think I don’t like Cristiano.”
However, fans on social media particularly X have accused Wayne Ronaldo of trying to gaslight Ronaldo, stating that the former Real Madrid star’s anger was not about Rooney’s preference for Messi, but rather his decision to personally attack him.
Saying Messi is the best doesn’t mean I hate Ronaldo – Wayne Rooney
The fans descended on Rooney for attacking Ronaldo personally at a time when he was grieving the loss of his child, only for Rooney to later claim in the interview with Rio Ferdinand that it was merely about his preference for Messi.

Go fvck urself, cunt. We all saw the things u did and said about him. It’s not about you preferring Messi, it’s about the way you spoke badly about Ronaldo with jealousy and envy. You were one of the people who led the campaign to label him the problem in his 2nd United stint 🤡 https://t.co/1EhnOLkIbP pic.twitter.com/61PBiBqiFy

I don’t believe a word he says… this is the same guy who was backing Ten Hag over Ronaldo not long ago https://t.co/nJmhDcWBfA pic.twitter.com/KlGEMFacqB

I remember him saying he was impressed with how Ten Hag handled Ronaldo. Now, Cristiano is on track to become the only player in history to score 1,000 official goals, with a shot at the World Cup as well. Bet Rooney has realized he was on the wrong side and is regretting it. https://t.co/uHLgIYV38O

Not buying it when the word was against him only Roy Keane spoke good on him all his other teammates were silent or added to the drama and Rooney was one of them. What’s the point acting like it’s all roses now because he’s back to winning. https://t.co/yBg79CNhZ8

When you compare how Rio and Keane spoke about Ronaldo at the time compared with the rest…
Finished the season United’s best player and top scorer. Lost a child in pre-season and missed most of it. A month later he’s finished and needs to leave. Shameful ‘punditry’. https://t.co/8vPaH2FJTE

You took shots and talked the most when he was at his lowest, also using it to leverage your legacy retroactively.
Not gonna be gaslit into being told otherwise. Hell of a player and good duo with him no doubt but what happened 2020-2024… won’t be changed. https://t.co/ZGOsUyiUOH
