President John Dramani Mahama has asked National Democratic Congress (NDC) members to abstain from damaging or stealing state property.

He cautioned party members against making the same mistakes that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) was accused of making and urged them to behave properly and refrain from actions that would erode Ghanaians’ trust.

Following accusations that state properties were looted and destroyed by people thought to be NDC sympathizers, the president made these statements.

Speaking on January 10 at the National Muslim Prayer and Thanksgiving held at Accra’s National Mosque at Kanda, Mr. Mahama gave the advised: “I call on all our supporters and others engaged in illegal actions, such as looting goods and occupying government offices, to desist from such practices. We must do things differently to maintain the trust and confidence Ghanaians have placed in us.

“Many have said it’s the same thing the NPP did in 2017, and that is why Ghanaians voted them out. We must not copy their mistakes. I plead with you, let us do things in an orderly manner.”

Mr. Mahama counseled NDC supporters to exercise restraint and let his soon-to-be ministers handle their grievances.

“Government is being formed, ministers will be put in place, other officials will be appointed. And as I said, we will have our full cabinet in 14 days.

“And so we will have ministers in charge if you have any issues you consult any of the ministers and have it resolved. So, exercise restraint. Many [people have said it is the same thing the NPP said when they came into 2017.”
