The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has opened discussions with former Manchester United assistant coach Steve McClaren over the vacant Black Stars head coach position.

Sources close to the GFA indicate that the talks were initiated by McClaren himself, who reached out through his representatives to express interest in the role.

The 64-year-old English tactician is currently unattached after leaving his position as Jamaica’s head coach following the Reggae Boys’ failure to secure direct qualification to the 2026 FIFA World Cup following a goalless draw with Curaçao.

McClaren becomes the latest high-profile name to enter the race to replace Otto Addo, who was sacked after Ghana’s poor results in the March international window.

The GFA has been in discussions with several experienced coaches in recent weeks. They were reportedly negotiating financial terms with former Croatia and West Ham manager Slaven Bilić for a possible four-month deal to guide the Black Stars at the World Cup.

Advanced talks have also been held with former Egypt and Real Madrid coach Carlos Queiroz, while Tom Saintfiet remains another name under active consideration.

The GFA appears to favour a short-term appointment to take the team through the 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign in Group L against England, Croatia and Panama.

No official statement has been issued yet, but Friday’s Executive Council meeting could provide more clarity on the direction the association intends to take regarding the appointment.
