Benjamin Asare is the Black Stars first choice goalkeeper Benjamin Asare is the Black Stars first choice goalkeeper

Before Benjamin Asare took charge of the goalposts, Ghana had conceded five goals in their opening four World Cup qualifiers.

But since his debut, the Black Stars have conceded just one goal in five games, a turnaround that has reignited faith in Ghana’s defence.

At 33, and after years of steady performances for Hearts of Oak, Asare’s rise has been a remarkable story. His national team breakthrough, built on 12 clean sheets in 18 league games, seemed overdue rather than surprising.

Against the Central African Republic, he once again kept a clean sheet, reinforcing his reputation for calm and structured goalkeeping.

Yet, his run of form has sparked a heated debate among fans. While some see him as a symbol of composure and a goalkeeper who organizes his defence and maintains balance, others insist he’s simply been lucky.

A section of supporters believes Asare has not yet faced a truly dangerous opponent and warn that tougher tests will expose his limits.

There’s also the argument that Ghana’s improved defense owes more to team shape and discipline than to individual brilliance.

But amid the criticism, many acknowledged that Asare has brought a rare sense of calm to the Black Stars’ backline, something the team had lacked in years.

Whether it’s luck, leadership, or late-blooming form, Benjamin Asare’s performances have clearly divided opinion. But for now, the numbers speak louder than the noise, the Black Stars are winning, and are not conceding many goals.

I see someone always trying to discredit the @HeartsOfOakGH goalkeeper Benjamin Asare.

Onething I realized in coaching was that, sometimes all you need is a lucky goalkeeper. I have dropped big name goalkeepers to win games with lucky ones

Hate Asare or not. He is our luck 🇬🇭🇺🇲 pic.twitter.com/PN9BahQtY1

Greatness is about consistent, reliable performances. A goalkeeper’s clean sheet record is a powerful metric of their quality, even if it doesn’t make the headlines.

Big man. You’re making those who are genuinely defending Asare for good reasons suffer

This isn’t an analogy you should consider at all

With this kinda thinking no wonder the Ghana league is in tatters.

Stop this luck thing. Plain and simple, we’re in a goalkeeper crisis as a nation. We don’t have good keepers around so let’s just keep him in goal until a better comes around
