The Ministry of Sports and Recreation will, on Monday, September 22, launch the first official activation of the National Recreation & Wellness Programme (NaRWP) at Mantse Agbonaa, Jamestown, under the theme “Play More, Live Well – The Ga-Mashie Edition.”

The programme, scheduled to begin at 6:00 a.m., is being organised in partnership with the Odododiodio Constituency, led by the Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Iddie Adams, and the Member of Parliament for Odododiodio, Hon. Alfred Nii Kotey Ashie.

According to the Ministry, the NaRWP represents a strategic national intervention aimed at promoting healthy lifestyles, reducing the burden of preventable diseases, and strengthening social cohesion through community-based recreation, wellness, rehabilitation, and school physical activity programmes.

“The NaRWP is not only about fun and games; it is about embedding wellness and recreation into the national development agenda. It reflects government’s recognition that health promotion and preventive care are as critical as healthcare delivery itself,” the Ministry noted in a statement ahead of the launch.

Monday’s activation will feature mass aerobics, free health screenings, indigenous games, football and volleyball matches, and special wellness-themed competitions designed to engage both the youth and the elderly. Prizes and trophies will also be awarded to encourage participation.

The Ministry has extended invitations to schools, youth organisations, fitness clubs, elderly associations, and healthcare volunteers, stressing that the initiative is inclusive and community-driven.

Officials say the Ga-Mashie activation is the first in a series of nationwide rollouts aimed at mainstreaming recreation and wellness into public life, with the long-term goal of supporting healthier populations, reducing lifestyle-related health risks, and improving productivity.
