A woman who lost control of her Audi and killed a ‘brilliant, kind and generous’ pedestrian walking on the pavement has been jailed for four-and-a-half years.

Shanise Hussain, 27, was driving her Audi A3 on Great Hampton Street in Birmingham on July 21, 2024, when she drove into two passers-by.

The woman was driving at speeds of 48mph in a 30mph zone before she tried to swerve around a vehicle, but accelerated on to the wrong side of the road and smashed into a central reservation.

Maurice Middleton was one of the two pedestrians who was hit by the vehicle – and he died at the scene at the age of 68.

A second passer-by suffered minor head and hand injuries following the crash. Damage was also caused to a parked vehicle.

Hussain remained at the scene to assist with West Midlands Police’s enquiries and was subsequently charged with causing death by dangerous driving.

She was this week found guilty of the offence following a trial at Birmingham Crown Court and sentenced to four years and six months in prison.

Hussain, of Handsworth, was also disqualified from driving for eight years and three months.

In an emotional tribute, Mr Middleton’s family described him as ‘the glue that held us all together’.

‘Maurice was the centre of our family and that is why his death has completely devastated us because it has left such a big hole in our hearts that nothing and none can ever fill,’ they added.

Detective Sergeant Richard Evans of West Midlands Police said the force’s thoughts were ‘first and foremost with the victims’ family’.

He continued: ‘I would take this opportunity to remind all road users of the responsibility they carry every time they get behind the wheel.

‘The decisions made in a moment can have life-changing consequences for many people.’
