The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has revealed that the late Member of Parliament for Akwatia, Ernest Yaw Kumi, died of heart failure.
The announcement was made in a statement read on his behalf by Second Deputy Speaker Bernard Ahiafor during the closing remarks of the Second Meeting of the First Session of the 9th Parliament on Friday, August 1, 2025.
The Speaker described the passing as a painful reminder of the demanding nature of parliamentary work.
“We were profoundly saddened by the untimely passing of our colleague, Honourable Ernest Yaw Kumi, the Member of Parliament for Akwatia, who passed away on 7th July 2025 at the youthful age of 40.
“His demise, attributed to heart failure, is a painful reminder of the demanding nature of our calling. As a House, we must begin earnest discussion on a comprehensive healthcare support programme tailored to the unique pressures of our parliamentary work,” the Speaker said.
Ernest Yaw Kumi, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament for Akwatia, passed away on July 7, 2025, at the age of 40.
