South Africa and Nigeria played an entertaining 1-1 draw South Africa and Nigeria played an entertaining 1-1 draw

Nigeria’s chances of returning to the FIFA World Cup for the first time since 2018 took another major blow after being held to a 1-1 draw by South Africa in Bloemfontein on Tuesday, September 9, 2025.

The Super Eagles came into the game knowing only a win would keep their qualification hopes alive. However, they fell behind after 25 minutes when captain William Troost-Ekong inadvertently turned a cross into his own net.

Nigeria found a lifeline just before half-time when Calvin Bassey headed in from a Fisayo Dele-Bashiru cross. The goal, however, sparked protests from South African fans, who claimed the ball had struck Bassey’s hand before going in.

Despite the equaliser, Nigeria struggled to assert themselves. South Africa dominated possession in the second half but lacked a clinical edge, while Nigeria, desperate for a winner, failed to create any clear-cut chances.

The result leaves South Africa top of the group with 17 points, needing just three more from their final two games against Zimbabwe and Rwanda in October 2025 to seal a World Cup return for the first time since hosting in 2010.

Nigeria, meanwhile, remain second with 11 points but could drop to third if Benin or Lesotho win later today. With fixtures against both Lesotho and Benin still to come, the Super Eagles face a daunting battle to keep their slim hopes alive.
