A man who stabbed his mother to death at his home has been sentenced to an indefinite hospital order.

Sebastian Compton, 47, appeared at Chelmsford Crown Court on Thursday after pleading guilty to manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility.

He was charged with murdering his mother, Michele Romano, 68, at his home in Great Baddow, Essex on February 9.

Essex Police had received a 999 call from a member of the public concerned by the appearance of a man in Chelmsford.

Officers and the ambulance service were deployed and, when the police arrived, Compton was sitting in the rear of an ambulance.

Michele was described as 'calm and good natured' and would often visit him at his ground floor flat to help out with shopping and chores, a neighbour said. Pictured: Michele Romano (left) and her husband Thierry Romano (right)

He stated he had just killed his mother and stabbed her multiple times.

Police and ambulance drove to his home address where they found Michele, who, despite the best efforts of paramedics, sadly died at the scene.

The court heard Compton was undergoing ‘acute’ psychosis at the time of the killing.

Initially, Compton denied Michele’s murder at a court appearance at Chelmsford Magistrates’ Court on Monday, February 12.

He then pleaded guilty to her manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility ahead of a scheduled trial to start on October 14.

This week, he was sentenced to an indefinite hospital order.

His mother Michele was described as ‘calm and good natured’ and would often visit him at his ground floor flat to help out with shopping and chores, a neighbour said.

Great Baddow, which borders the city of Chelmsford is known as an urban village with a population of around 15,000 people, making it the second largest village in England after Bradfield, South Yorkshire.
