The immediate past Presiding Bishop of the Methodist Church Ghana, Most Reverend Paul Kwabena Boafo, has stressed the urgent need for the Church in Ghana to establish a united front and a single, authoritative voice to speak out against societal ills.

Speaking at the closing, thanksgiving, and awards ceremony of the Christian Council of Ghana’s maiden Ecumenical Convention, held from November 14 to 17, 2025, he urged the church to remain strong and avoid divisions that could compromise the body of Christ.

His sermon was delivered on the theme “Uniting the Body of Christ for Greater Impact.”

In his address, Rev. Boafo asserted that the Christian community must unite in one voice to speak forcefully against corruption, environmental degradation, and all other forms of evil that undermine peace, stability, security, and safety in the country.

He specifically noted that local councils of churches should collaborate to confront wrongdoing within their communities.

He insisted that the church must regain its moral authority and establish a unified prophetic voice to hold political leaders accountable, rather than competing for influence among denominations.

He described such competition as “unhealthy,” urging instead that the Church unite to promote peace, good governance, environmental protection, and accountable leadership.

“The local council of churches at your level can come together and speak against evil in our society,” he said.

“You can come together and say no to galamsey [illegal mining]. You can come together and say no to injustice, no to evil, and no to humiliation. We need to speak against corruption in our society, and some of these corrupt people are within our churches. We need to speak against them; we must not shield them. That is how we can remain relevant and impactful in our society,” he stated.

He further called for the church to speak up against environmental degradation and demand the political transparency the nation needs.

Rev. Boafo highlighted that the Christian community has played a major role in maintaining Ghana’s peace, stability, and safety.

To sustain this role, he emphasised the necessity of continued unity over fragmentation.

He added that the convention’s theme was highly appropriate, noting that while churches are diverse in their practices, they all stand under the essential banner of Christ.

As a majority Christian nation, he reminded attendees that if they pursue a single purpose and agenda — disciplining the nation — they must remember that in unity, they can transform lives, uplift the country, and maintain peace and stability in Ghana and beyond.

The convention served as a strategic platform to strengthen relationships among Christian denominations in Ghana and the diaspora, with the aim of pursuing collective impact on national issues.
