The National Concerned Small-Scale Miners Association, Ghana (NCSSMAG), has launched an anti-galamsey taskforce aimed at curbing illegal mining activities on the country’s rivers and streams.

The taskforce is charged with monitoring the operations of association members, enforcing regulatory compliance, and ensuring strict adherence to responsible and sustainable mining practices.

To strengthen enforcement, NCSSMAG has deployed taskforces across major mining zones and acquired a mini speedboat to support operations on water bodies.

Government moves to register small-scale miners to tackle illegal mining

This effort complements the government’s Blue Water Guards Initiative, led by the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, which is dedicated at protecting water bodies from the harmful impacts of illegal mining.

Speaking at the launch, the President of the Association, Michael Kwadwo Peprah, issued a stern warning to illegal miners operating directly on water bodies, urging them to cease their activities immediately.

He emphasised that any defiance would be met with direct action from the taskforce.

“Our message is clear: all illegal mining operations on water bodies must cease immediately. The taskforce will not compromise in its mission to safeguard our rivers for both present and future generations,” he said.
