On February 4, 2025, parliamentary procedures devolved into insults and political score-settling.

The event, which occurred amid debates marking the 60th anniversary of Joseph Boakye Danquah’s death, exposed leadership’s failure to maintain order and create healthy dialogue.

The debate turned heated when Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, Member of Parliament for Tamale Central, questioned what he saw as the Minority’s false adulation for JB Danquah.

His worries triggered a heated debate, prompting the presiding Speaker, Andrew Asiamah, to limit input, allowing only the parliamentary leadership to speak.

However, this choice appeared to suffocate other MPs rather than restore order.

Dr. Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings, MP for Korle-Klottey, was on her feet, asking for permission to speak, when the Speaker ignored her and instead gave the floor to Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin.

As the Minority Leader spoke, several MPs interrupted, escalating the chaos in the room.

In a horrifying moment that highlighted Parliament’s corrosive political culture, a speaker from the Minority side hurled a very disparaging remark at Dr. Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings, referring to her as the “daughter of a murderer” and asking her to sit down.

Another unnamed MP supposed to be on the Minority side responded, alleging, “But there is evidence that her father killed people.”

Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin then calmed the MPs before continuing his speech on the floor.

Such statements, addressed at the daughter of former President Jerry John Rawlings, not only show Parliament’s deep differences, but also reveal a lack of leadership in preventing personal assaults and fostering respectful discussion.
