Shoddy bridge construction blamed for 17-year-old’s death

A 17-year-old student of Nkwanta Senior High School in the Oti Region tragically drowned after falling off a bridge in the Bontibor farming community.

The student was said to have fallen off the broken bridge and drowned while returning from the farm on Monday, August 18, 2025.

According to residents, the bridge, built about a year ago, was poorly constructed, rendering it susceptible to the recent heavy rains. At the same time, its collapse has cut off the community and left residents stranded.

The Assembly Member for Bontibor/Salifukrom Electoral Area, Frank Yeboah, who confirmed the tragic incident to Adom News, attributed the disaster to substandard construction and lack of oversight, blaming the contractor’s negligence for the student’s death.

He posited that residents had long complained about the bridge’s poor quality, but their concerns were ignored.

The Paramount Chief of the Ntrubo North Traditional Area, Nana Obirikiti Amanado, whose grandson was the deceased, expressed shock about the development and added that the community is struggling to access essential services, with pregnant women, the sick and farmers facing significant challenges.

Nana Obirikiti Amanado appealed to the government to take immediate action to construct a new bridge for the community.
