A severe water crisis has hit Agona Swedru, Gomoa Central and Agona East District for over two weeks with the more than 800,000 people struggling to get water, mostly polluted from streams, wells, and boreholes for domestic chores.

The chaotic situation has worsened this week with some food vendors abandoning their trade, while others were using unhygienic water to cook.

Hundreds of school children had abandoned the classrooms and are seen trekking long distances in search of water from polluted sources.

Some of the residents who spoke to GNA in an interview, expressed grave concern and were also disappointed in Ghana Water Company at Agona Swedru and Agona Kwanyaku Water Works for failing to give information on the situation to the public.

According to them, as clients, service providers should develop cordial relationship with them and provide timely information on the situation at hand.

However, the officers failed to keep them informed of the shortage, resulting in their suffering.

Officers were tight lipped when the GNA attempted to crosscheck the reason for the crisis, with a source stating that their superiors in Cape Coast were the right people to speak on the matter.

GNA investigations revealed that the pumping machines at Agona Kwanyaku Water Works had broken down due to galamsey activities upstream of the Ayensu River.

According to the Assembly member for Agona Kwanyaku, Nana Ohene Frempong, the illegal mining activities had badly polluted the Ayensu River.

He called on the government to take immediate and swift action against the nation wreckers polluting water bodies to forestall the suffering of the many people, especially school children, food vendors and others.

The Assemblyman appealed to the Minister of Works and Housing and other relevant agencies under the Ministry to procure new machines for Kwanyaku Water Works to salvage lives in Agona East, Agona West and Gomoa Central Districts.

Madam Amina, a waakye seller at Swedru appealed to President Mahama to intervene to avert the outbreak of cholera and other communicable diseases.
