The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has officially opened disciplinary proceedings against Senegal head coach Pape Thiaw following his actions during the dramatic 2025 Africa Cup of Nations final.

The decision places Thiaw under threat of a lengthy suspension, with reports suggesting he could potentially miss the 2026 FIFA World Cup, scheduled to be co-hosted by the USA, Canada, and Mexico from June 11 to July 19, 2026.

The proceedings stem from a controversial moment late in the AFCON final between Senegal and hosts Morocco on Sunday, January 18, 2026.

A penalty was awarded to Morocco in stoppage time after a VAR review, sparking protests from the Senegal players.

Thiaw urged his squad to leave the pitch and return to the dressing room in protest of the decision, temporarily halting play and escalating tensions in the stadium.

While Senegal ultimately went on to win 1–0 in extra time, the incident has drawn the attention of CAF, who are investigating whether Thiaw’s actions violated disciplinary codes regarding player conduct, match integrity, and engagement with match officials.

The outcome of the proceedings could have wide-ranging consequences for Senegalese football on the global stage.

Reports indicate Thiaw could face a maximum suspension that could go as long as the 2026 World Cup.

A suspension for Thiaw could affect the team’s preparation and leadership ahead of the 2026 World Cup, placing the country’s national squad under scrutiny at a critical time.

CAF has not yet announced a timeline for its investigation or potential sanctions.
