Sefa has opened up about the unlikely moment that brought her into Ghana’s music industry, revealing that her journey began with an Instagram message from rapper and entrepreneur D-Black while she was still a student.

The singer said she was attending lectures when she noticed a DM from D-Black. Unsure whether the account was authentic, she sought help from her lecturer before taking the message seriously.

Speaking on a cooking show on UTV, Sefa said her lecturer checked the account and confirmed that it was D-Black’s verified Instagram profile.

“I was having lectures in school. I realized I had a DM on Instagram from D-Black. I showed the message to my madam that I got a message, but she should confirm if it’s really D-Black. When she checked, she said it’s him and it’s a verified account,” she averred.

Sefa said D-Black told her he had watched a video of her singing and was impressed by her abilities. At the time, he and music producer DJ Breezy were preparing to establish a record label and wanted to know whether she would be interested in joining.

“I opened the message and D-Black said he saw a video of me singing. He and DJ Breezy want to start a record label, so I should let him know if I’m interested in joining,” she stated.

The unexpected proposal left Sefa with a major decision to make. Rather than committing immediately, she discussed the opportunity with her mother, who encouraged her to take the chance and find out where it could lead.

“I had to discuss it with my mother and she agreed that I should give it a try and let’s see how it would go,” she revealed.

Following her mother’s advice, Sefa headed to the studio, where she found herself surrounded by artistes she had never met.

The experience was intimidating for the young singer, who was still trying to find her feet in an industry she had yet to enter professionally. She also noticed that she was the only woman among the artistes present.

“I went to the studio and I saw a couple of artistes there. That’s the first time I saw them, so I was so nervous and I was the only woman among them,” she said.

Her nerves did not stop her from getting to work. Sefa was asked to record a song with Ghanaian musician Epixode, marking one of her first experiences in a professional studio setting.

She said Epixode and the other artistes made the transition easier by supporting her after realizing that she was inexperienced in the industry.

“I was asked to record a song with Epixode and luckily for me, they helped me a lot because they realized I’m new in the industry,” she stated.

For Sefa, the session eventually became an audition of sorts. Her vocal performance impressed those around her and gave them confidence that she could build a career as a recording artiste.

It was only after hearing her perform that the team began discussing the possibility of formally signing her to the label.

“After they realized I could sing well, that’s when the signing conversation came in,” the singer disclosed.

    Watch her statement below.

I received a message from my former record label boss, D-Black, saying he had seen videos of me singing. He told me that he and DJ Breezy were planning to launch a new record label and asked if I would be interested in joining. That message marked the beginning of my journey with… pic.twitter.com/80HJGkAxyq
