It is a known fact that Dr Joseph Boakye Danquah, one of the leading figures of the United Gold Coast Convention (UGCC), was opposed to the way Ghana’s first President, Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah, wanted Ghana to attain independence.

While Dr Kwame Nkrumah was fighting for “self-government now”, Dr JB Danquah was for “self-government at the shortest possible time,” and he (Danquah) did all he could to ensure that the country got independence.

History shows that Dr Danquah wrote a letter to the late Queen of England, Elizabeth II, who was the Head of State of Ghana then, urging her not to assent to a law which would make Ghana a republic.

The founding member of the UGCC, it appears, even campaigned against Ghana’s Republican Constitution.

A campaign poster of Dr Danquah, which was broadcast by Max TV during a recent interview with historian Yaw Anokye Frimpong, shows him campaigning against Ghana becoming a republic.

The poster read, “Vote Dr Danquah and vote no to the Republican Constitution. Save Ghana Now!”

Anokye Frimpong, during the interview, claimed that JB Danquah’s opposition to Ghana becoming a republic was one of the ways he “betrayed the country.”

He added that this should explain why former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo cancelled the celebration of July 1 as a public holiday while he was in office.
