Legendary Ghanaian boxer, Clement Nii Kwatei Quartey, was laid to rest on Tuesday, December 17, 2024, in London, United Kingdom.

Prior to the burial, a service was held at the East Chapel Breakspear Crematorium, where his body was subsequently cremated.

In attendance were family and friends of the late boxer, who paid their last respects to one of Ghana’s iconic boxers.

Clement Quartey died on November 2 in London at the age of 86.

While there is no confirmation of the presence of government and Ghana Boxing Authority representatives at the burial and funeral services, a tribute was paid to him in Parliament.

The ranking member of the Parliamentary Sports Select Committee, Wisdom Kobena Woyome, paid tribute to the late legendary boxer Clement Ike Quartey during a sitting on December 17, 2024.

He commended the late boxer for his immense contribution to sports, noting that he was the first Ghanaian and African to win an Olympic silver medal in Rome in 1960 in the Light Welterweight boxing category.

Woyome further consoled the bereaved family, urging them to stand firm in these trying times as they prepare for the final funeral rites.

“As a legendary figure in Ghana’s sporting history, Clement Ike Quartey Senior’s contributions and achievements in boxing and the Olympic movement have had a lasting impact on Ghana’s participation in the Olympic Games. Ghana started participating in the Olympic Games in 1952 in Helsinki, Finland, and has since attended 18 other times, winning five medals.

“I wish to offer my heartfelt condolences to the family and his two children, Clifton and Alex, of our departed legend during these difficult times. May they take consolation that their own, Clement Ike Quartey, left a legacy that is far beyond the ring, touching many lives with his remarkable skills, determination, and sportsmanship.

“I pray that the soul of Clement Ike Quartey and all sportsmen and women who played significant roles in raising the flag of Ghana rest in perfect peace,” he said.
