    Member of Parliament for Akwapim North, Sammi Awuku, has revealed that former Vice President and flagbearer aspirant of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has serious concerns regarding recent decisions by the NPP Presidential Election Committee ahead of the party’s presidential primary scheduled for January 31, 2026.

    Speaking on Adom TV on Friday, January 23, 2026, he explained that Dr Bawumia believes some of the committee’s decisions have not created a level playing field for all the aspirants.

    “He is unhappy and it was obvious during the signing of the peace pact. It is clear he is worried that some of the decisions taken by the committee could have serious implications for the future of the party, particularly the ban on proxy voting during the presidential primary,” Awuku stated.

    He continued,“The development has disenfranchised hundreds of Bawumia supporters in the diaspora because we believe we are very popular with NPP branches abroad. We won the diaspora vote the last time in 2023″.

    The NPP has announced a ban on proxy voting as part of guidelines for the presidential primary, sparking concerns among members abroad and students who argue that the decision disenfranchises them.

    Petitioners requested the committee to reconsider, citing the party’s growing international footprint and the need to accommodate members unable to vote in person.

    However, Joe Osei Owusu, Chairman of the NPP Presidential Election Committee, has rejected the petitions.

    He insists the restriction will remain in place to safeguard the credibility and smooth conduct of the elections.

    According to him, in-person voting is the most reliable system for ensuring transparency in a highly competitive contest.

    The five aspirants contesting the NPP presidential primary are former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, former Minister of Education Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, former Member of Parliament for Assin Central Kennedy Agyapong, Member of Parliament for Abetifi Dr Bryan Acheampong and former General Secretary of the party, Kwabena Agyei Agyapong.
