Following reactions to Samini’s performance at the 29th Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) Awards, the artiste has explained what happened during his set.

Some audience members criticised the Dancehall artiste for performing offbeat, prompting him to clarify the circumstances surrounding the performance.

In an interview on Hitz FM on November 12, 2025, Samini disclosed that he was not originally scheduled to perform at the event.

He said he had been out of town and returned just two days prior to the event, when his friend Albert Kwabena Dwumfuor, the president of the GJA, asked him to step in and help out, which is how he ended up on stage.

Godwin Asediba named 2025 Journalist of the Year

“So, I originally was not billed to perform on that show. A friend is the current president of the GJA. I was out of town and got back two days prior to the event. Then he called and said, so if I have returned, I should come and help him, so it was on that tip I went there,” he explained.

During his performance, some sections of the audience felt that the sound quality was below standard. Samini attributed this to technical difficulties with the onstage monitors, which were not functioning properly.

He emphasised that such glitches are common in live performances and should be expected by those familiar with the industry.

“Two, the performance bit. I think for a live performer, every once in a while, you should expect glitches here and there because it’s a live thing. A lot of things happening at the same time. So, with this very incident, my monitors on stage were off. Yeah. So, every live performer would understand what that means,” he added.

The 29th GJA Awards took place on November 8, 2025, at the Manhyia Palace, marking the first time the event was held outside Accra.

Godwin Asediba of TV3 was crowned the 2024 Journalist of the Year. The event, held under the high patronage of the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, was a grand celebration of media excellence in Ghana.

The ceremony drew several high-profile attendees, including President John Dramani Mahama, Acting Chief Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie, and Alex Apau Dadey, Executive Chairman of the KGL Group.
