Ghana’s Black Stars face a massive setback ahead of the 2026 World Cup as AS Monaco announced that defender Mohammed Salisu has suffered a season-ending anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tear in his left knee.

The injury struck in the final moments of Monaco’s 3–1 loss to Olympique Lyonnais in Ligue 1. Follow-up medical scans confirmed the damage, ruling the Ghana international out for the remainder of the campaign.

The club vowed comprehensive support during his rehabilitation. This blow deepened Monaco’s woes on a grim evening, during which they lost ground in the race for European spots amid multiple player injuries.

Salisu had emerged as a key starter, filling gaps left by Christian Mawissa and Eric Dier. Alarmingly, it is the second ACL injury for the club in consecutive matches, after Takumi Minamino’s tear against AJ Auxerre before the winter break.

For Ghana, the news sparks grave concerns over Salisu’s World Cup readiness. His extended recovery could sideline him as the Black Stars tackle a tough group featuring England, Croatia, and Panama.

Otto Addo’s squad desperately needs its full strength to compete meaningfully in the tournament. Salisu’s physicality and defensive nous have made him indispensable, especially after his strong Monaco form.

Ghana now turns to backups like Alexander Djiku, but few match his profile. The injury exposes vulnerabilities in the Black Stars’ backline depth.

With preparations intensifying, Ghana’s medical team will track Salisu’s progress. A prolonged absence risks derailing ambitions, forcing tactical shifts. The Black Stars must rally, proving depth can fuel their global charge.
