The Nketiaah Royal Family of Akuapem-Akropong has publicly condemned a petition circulating on social media targeting the Okuapemhemaa, Nana Afua Obuo Nketiaah II, calling it “baseless, self-serving and contrary to Akuapem customary law.”

In an official response dated 23 December 2025 and addressed to the Registrar of the Akuapem Traditional Council, the family, through lawyer Raymond Bagnabu, dismissed accusations leveled by individuals claiming to be Mpakanfo (Divisional Chiefs) of the Akuapem Traditional Area.

The petition had alleged misconduct on the part of the Okuapemhemaa and sought intervention from the royal family. However, the Nketiaah family maintains that the petitioners have no legal or customary authority to challenge matters relating to the Ofori Kuma Stool or the Queenmother.

“The petitioners are neither members of the Nketiaah Royal Family nor of the recognized royal houses — Nketiaah, Ama Ogyinae, and Sakyiabia — from which occupants of the Ofori Kuma Stool are selected. They therefore have no locus to make such claims,” the family stated.

The statement highlighted that Nana Afua Obuo Nketiaah II was duly installed in 2017 following all customary procedures and that previous court rulings affirm the Queenmother’s sole authority to nominate a candidate for the Ofori Kuma Stool. Any person claiming to be Okuapehene without her nomination, the family stressed, is legally an imposter.

Regarding the upcoming Odwira Festival, the family warned that all rites and announcements must occur only under the Okuapemhemaa’s direction. Any attempts by the petitioners to organize or perform such rituals without authorisation, they said, are “contrary to Akuapem custom.”

The royal family also dismissed allegations that the Queenmother refused to attend Traditional Council meetings chaired by Kwadwo Kesse Antwi, noting that he has been restrained by court orders from presenting himself as Okuapehene and has faced contempt convictions.

Describing the petition as a calculated attempt to undermine the Okuapemhemaa, the family has demanded a full retraction within seven days, threatening legal action if their demand is not met.

“The Okuapemhemaa has not acted contrary to any known custom of the Akuapem Traditional Area,” the response concluded.
