A freshly graduated Queensland Police officer who had been allegedly stabbed in the neck managed to deploy his Taser after an early morning call-out.
Two police officers arrived at a domestic disturbance between a father and a son at Hemmant in Brisbane‘s east at around dawn on Sunday.
While officers tried to defuse the situation a 35-year-old man allegedly stabbed the new constable in the neck twice and assaulted his partner, a senior constable, before fleeing.
But the injured police officer aged in his 40s, who had only graduated from the police academy in July, gave chase with blood gushing out of his neck.
Queensland Police Union president Shane Prior said the officer was ‘an absolute hero’ for his actions.
‘Whilst holding onto his neck to stop the bleeding, he managed to chase after the offender, deploy a Taser but only had to stop because he was getting weary from the blood loss,’ he told reporters in Brisbane on Sunday.
He was given first aid before being taken to hospital in a stable condition.

Mr Prior also said the other police officer was ‘slashed across the forehead’ with a knife.
Police later arrested the 35-year-old man outside a business at around 7am and charged him with two counts of attempted murder.
He will appear in court on Monday.
Acting Superintendent Heath McQueen praised the ‘commitment and courage’ of the officers and the ‘split second decisions’ they made in a fluid situation.
‘This incident highlights the inherent risk that our officers face on a daily basis in serving the community,’ he said.
He said the constable would undergo surgery for significant injuries.
