The Minister of Roads-designate, Kwame Governs Agbodza, has announced that road tolls will be reintroduced.

According to him, the collection of road tolls will return with technological advancements that will make the process easier and more efficient.

He emphasised that road tolls were a significant source of revenue for the road sector.

Appearing before the Appointments Committee on January 20, 2025, he stated, “As a result, I believe there was some level of negligence in the way it was handled. They claim road tolls were generating about GH¢8 million, but today, there are contractors working for Ghana who are owed GH¢5,000 cedis. Can you imagine the number of road weeders who could be paid with GH¢80 million?”

He added, “Our side consistently stood on principle and said to bring the road tolls back. Yes, road tolls are coming back, but not in the form of building obstructions on the road and having someone manually collect money. They will return through a technological platform that makes it fair, easy to collect, easy to account for, and transparent so the public knows what the money is being used for. We shall come out with a policy on how it will be implemented.”

Road tolls were abolished in November 2021 by the former Nana Akufo-Addo administration.
