    RMU mourns fallen national heroes in tragic helicopter crash

    The Board and Management of the Regional Maritime University (RMU) has expressed its deepest condolences to the Government and people of Ghana, as well as to the bereaved families, following the tragic helicopter crash that claimed the lives of several high-ranking and distinguished individuals on Wednesday, August 6.

    In a press release signed by the Ag Vice Chancellor Dr Jethro W Brooks Jr on behalf of the board and management, the university joined the nation in mourning the loss of these gallant individuals who died in line of duty.

    “We join the nation in mourning the loss of these gallant individuals who died while on national duty,” the stated read.

    The individuals the statement said, “Minister for Defence, Dr Edward Kofi Omane Boamah, Minister for Environment, Science and Technology, Alhaji Dr Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, Ag Deputy National Security Coordinator, Alhaji Muniru Mohammed Limuna, Vice Chairperson of the National Democratic Congress(NDC), Dr Samuel Sarpong and Deputy Director General, NADMO, Samuel Aboagye as well as Squadron Leader Peter Befemi Anala, Flying Officer Amaning Twum Ampadu and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah will forever be remembered for their service and sacrifice.”

    “On behalf of the RMU and its Member States,Cameroon, The Gambia, Ghana, Liberia and Sierra Leone, we extend heartfelt sympathies to the families of the fallen heroes,” it added.

    “May the memory of the departed continue to inspire unity, patriotism and a renewed sense of purpose among all citizens,” it further stated.

    A little after midday on Wednesday, August 6, 2025, the Ghana Armed Forces issued a statement indicating that a helicopter headed for Obuasi had gone off radar, with efforts underway to locate the missing aircraft.

    “A GAF helicopter, GH-29, that took off this morning at 0912hrs from Accra and headed for Obuasi is currently off the radar. All efforts are being made to establish contact. On board were three crew members and five passengers. Further details will be communicated soon,” the statement said.

    The Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah, later in the afternoon, confirmed the deaths of the eight persons in a short briefing at the Jubilee House.

    He confirmed that the victims, including the Minister of Defence, Dr Edward Omane Boamah, and the Minister of Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation, Dr Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, lost their lives in the helicopter crash that occurred at Adansi Akrofuom in the Adansi Akrofuom District of the Ashanti Region.

    The others include Limuna Muniru, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator; Samuel Sarpong, Vice Chairman, National Democratic Congress (NDC); Samuel Aboagye, NADMO Deputy Director-General; and three crew members.
