Rugby League Federation Ghana (RLFG) has held a three-day review and development programme for coaches, match officials and sports teachers in the Ashanti Region, aimed at strengthening the foundation of School Rugby League in the region.

The programme, which began at the Afigya Kwabre South District Education Office, comprised coaching and match officiating courses, as well as a developmental review of the sport.

In attendance were 22 sports teachers drawn from Aduman SHS, Pentecost SHS, Afigya Secondary Technical, St. Michael SHS, Akrofrom DA Primary/JHS, Apagya DA Primary/JHS, Akrowa DA Primary/JHS, Mowire DA Primary/JHS, Adumoa DA Primary/JHS, Kyerekrom DA Primary/JHS and Amoako DA Primary/JHS.

They were taken through practical technical sessions led by RLFG Technical Director Marshall Nortey, covering Rugby League rules, positioning, coaching, player management and match-day responsibilities.

The District Director of Education for Afigya Kwabre South and Vice Chairman of the Ashanti Region Rugby League, Mr David Akomeah Asokwah, commended the teachers for their commitment and encouraged them to continue creating opportunities for young people through Rugby League.

The Ashanti Regional Rugby League Manager, Mr Julius Amevor, highlighted the growth of the sport across the region, particularly the increasing participation of schools and the emergence of young talents.

He disclosed that Osei Tutu Senior High School (OKESS), Kumasi Girls’ Senior High School, Opoku Ware School and the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) have joined the Rugby League pathway, further expanding the network of institutions involved in the sport.

On the second and third days, RLFG General Manager and Coach Educator, Jafaru Awudu Mustapha, together with fellow coach educators Elizabeth Adongo, Marshall Nortey and Chris Ebo Da-Gama, took nearly 30 participants through an intensive coaching and match officiating programme at the Baba Yara Stadium Hockey Pitch.

The sessions combined classroom-based learning with practical activities covering coaching processes, player development, Rugby League rules, positioning, decision-making and match-day responsibilities.

Speaking at the closing ceremony, the Ashanti Regional Head of the National Sports Authority (NSA), Nana Gyama Darkwa, congratulated the RLFG on its developmental agenda aimed at spreading the sport across the region.

He also urged the federation to provide more equipment to support the expansion of Rugby League in schools.

Also in attendance were the Chairman of the Ashanti Region Rugby League Association, Nana Adu Gyamfi Kumanin Barima Kese I, and vice-chairman, Mr David Akomeah Asokwah.
