Riyad Mahrez once again proved decisive on the continental stage as Algeria edged past Burkina Faso 1-0 on Sunday evening to secure qualification for the knockout phase of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco at the Stade Prince Moulay Hassan in Rabat.

The Al-Ahli winger scored the only goal of the contest from the penalty spot in the first half, maintaining his fine scoring form at the tournament.

Algeria were awarded the spot-kick after sustained pressure in the Burkina Faso area, and Mahrez showed his trademark composure to calmly send the goalkeeper the wrong way.

It was his third goal of the competition, following a brace in the Desert Foxes’ emphatic 3-0 opening victory over Sudan.

Algeria started the match on the front foot, dominating possession and dictating the tempo with their crisp passing and intelligent movement.

Mahrez, operating from the right flank, was at the heart of most attacking moves, constantly troubling the Burkinabe defence with his creativity and experience.

Burkina Faso, aware of the stakes, grew into the game after the interval and pushed hard for an equaliser.

They committed more bodies forward and enjoyed spells of pressure but found Algeria’s defence well organised and difficult to break down.

Goalkeeper Luca Zidane was also alert when called upon, ensuring the Desert Foxes maintained their slender advantage.

Despite Burkina Faso’s late surge, Algeria managed the closing stages with maturity, seeing out the contest without conceding clear-cut chances.

The victory confirms Algeria’s place in the round of 16, making them the third team to book qualification after Nigeria and Egypt.

With momentum building and Mahrez in inspired form, Algeria will now turn their focus to finishing the group stage strongly as they continue their quest for continental glory.
