Member of Parliament for Akim Oda, Alexander Akwasi Acquah, has expressed grave concern over the sudden removal of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, describing the development as a major setback to the independence and credibility of Ghana’s judicial system.

Speaking on UTV, the MP noted that the judiciary represents one of the strongest pillars of Ghana’s democracy, and any interference with its leadership threatens the rule of law.

“The removal of Justice Torkornoo is not just about one individual. It is about the image of our judiciary, the trust of the people, and the strength of our democratic institutions,” Mr. Acquah emphasized.

He argued that Justice Torkornoo, since assuming office, had taken bold steps to reform the courts and restore confidence in the justice delivery system. Her leadership, he said, was gradually rebuilding faith among ordinary citizens, especially in cases involving corruption and human rights.

The Akim Oda lawmaker warned that if such decisions are influenced by political or external interests, it could erode public trust and cast doubt on the impartiality of the courts. “The judiciary must remain a sacred institution, insulated from politics and undue pressures. When we tamper with it, we tamper with the very foundation of our democracy,” he cautioned.

Mr. Acquah further called on Parliament, the Ghana Bar Association, and civil society to rise above partisan considerations and demand transparency in the circumstances surrounding Justice Torkornoo’s removal.

He stressed that safeguarding judicial independence should be a collective responsibility. “Today it is Justice Torkornoo. Tomorrow it could be another. We must protect the integrity of the judiciary for the sake of posterity,” he concluded.
