The scheduled registration for the 9th Parliament of Ghana has been postponed indefinitely due to delays in the Electoral Commission’s (EC) transmission of the list of duly elected Members of Parliament from the December 2024 general elections.

The registration, initially planned for today, was expected to kick-start preparations for the incoming parliamentary term. However, the EC’s failure to meet the deadline has caused a disruption.

A statement from Parliament’s Secretariat announced the postponement, citing the unavailability of the certified list of MPs-elect from the EC as the primary reason.

The statement expressed regret for the inconvenience caused and assured all stakeholders of updates as soon as the EC fulfils its obligation.

Observers have expressed concerns over the delays, emphasizing the importance of timely certification of elected officials to ensure the smooth transition and functionality of the next Parliament.

The EC has yet to release an official statement explaining the delay.

Political analysts and civil society groups have urged the Commission to expedite the process to avoid further disruptions to the country’s democratic schedule.

This development has drawn attention to the need for improved efficiency and transparency in Ghana’s electoral processes, with stakeholders calling for reforms to prevent such occurrences in future elections.
