Reggie Rockstone has revealed how an unexpected comment from a woman he once dated brought home a warning his friends had repeatedly given him about getting romantically involved with fans.

The hiplife pioneer said his friends believed intimate encounters with admirers could strip away some of the mystery surrounding a celebrity and change the way fans viewed their idols.

Speaking on Talk To Kula, Rockstone shared a story from the early years of his career involving a woman who appeared to have been intrigued by his public persona.

“My friends used to say we shouldn’t sleep with the fans. I remember years back, I was with this girl, when I was Reggie Rockstone; she was a fine sister,” he said.

According to Rockstone, the situation took an amusing turn after the two became intimate. As he got dressed afterwards, the woman, who had been watching him, made a remark that immediately reminded him of what his friends had been saying.

“We did the ‘do’ and we were done; we were in an air-conditioned room. I was naked and I was trying to wear my clothes. The lady was lying on the bed watching me as I was wearing my clothes and she said to me, ‘So is this the Rockstone, Rockstone I’ve been hearing about?’ just because she had seen me naked,” he recounted.

Rockstone said the woman’s reaction illustrated the difference between the larger-than-life image of a celebrity and the reality of seeing that person in a private setting.

He said that was essentially what his friends meant when they warned him about becoming intimate with fans.

“When my friends say don’t sleep with the fans, it kind of demotes the shine,” Rockstone averred.

Despite the attention that often comes with fame, Rockstone maintained that he has never deliberately used his status as a well-known musician to exploit women.

“I’ve never taken advantage of who I am in terms of my relations with women. Women love famous people, but I never took advantage,” he stated.
