Ghanaian referee Maxwell Hanson is demanding a public apology and retraction from Ghana Football Association (GFA) official and Young Apostles owner, Samuel Anim Addo, after the latter accused him of unethical and corrupt practices.

In a letter dated January 10, 2025, Maxwell Hanson, through his legal counsel, denied the corruption allegations levelled against him by the GFA Executive Council member in a post on X (formerly known as Twitter).

The letter emphasised that Anim Addo’s accusations were ‘baseless and without justification’ while highlighting the ‘serious harm’ the allegations could cause to Hanson’s professional reputation.

Through his legal team, Maxwell Hanson demanded an immediate retraction of the post and “an unequivocal public apology, retracting the false, defamatory, and injurious statements made.”

The letter further indicated that the referee would pursue legal action against the football administrator if he failed to comply.

“Failure to comply with this letter may result in our client instituting formal legal proceedings against you without further notice, including seeking damages for defamation,” the letter warned.

    Background

On January 9, 2025, Samuel Anim Addo, in a post on X, accused referee Maxwell Hanson of being compromised and favouring Dreams FC in their 1-0 victory over Accra Lions.

Anim Addo claimed that Hanson had become the GFA’s “referee for dirty works” in the Ghana Premier League.

Ghana’s focus the last few weeks has been about the last general elections and inauguration of a new set of political and governance leaders many consider a new dawn following diverse challenges for years now.
