The heartbroken fiancee of record-breaking climber Jake Whisenant has broken her silence on the death of the ‘love of her life’ in an emotional tribute.

The 30-year-old Whisenant, famed for scaling Yosemite’s iconic El Capitan in record time, died on August 3 during an accident in the Sierra Nevada in the western United States.

Emma London, who was engaged to the renowned climber, penned a heart-wrenching obituary for her late fiance shared by Climbing.com earlier this week.

In the emotional essay, London shared a candid glimpse into Whisenant’s life beyond his peak-scrambling endeavors as well as recounting the moments surrounding his death on Sequoia Kings Canyon.

‘One week ago, just before sunset, I received the call that no one ever wants to get about the love of their life,’ London wrote.

‘Jake had fallen to his death while climbing a first ascent in Sequoia Kings Canyon. As dusk turned to night, I was forced to say goodbye to the last day we were both here on Earth.

‘Jake’s life was cut tragically short. His climbing career, too, was short but filled with adventures and accomplishments that speak for themselves.’

In a grievous statement, the devastated fiancee said she felt as if she was being punished for a crime she did not commit with his death.

‘When the sudden and indifferent tidal wave of cataclysmic loss sweeps over your life, it is all too easy to believe the world has cruelly and unfairly betrayed you as punishment for a crime you did not commit,’ she wrote.

London acknowledged Whisenant’s countless climbing achievements, including his speed records on many notable Yosemite climbs such as The Prow on Washington Column (2 hours, 52 minutes, 29 seconds) and Lurking Fear on El Capitan (2 hours, 55 minutes, 32 seconds).

London also described him as a great surfer and cyclist when she first met him at college, where Whisenant was studying environmental studies at the University of California – Santa Barbara.

She said he had not yet caught the climbing bug at the time but that he ‘began deepening his connection’ with the mountains after he graduated from college.

London also paid tribute to Whisenant’s character, detailing how he cared for his mother after she was diagnosed with ALS in 2021. He further turned to climbing in his grief when she died the following year.

She described Whisenant’s mother as his ‘biggest champion,’ recounting how, before her death, they shared multiple Facetime calls together from the summits of Whisenant’s miraculous climbs.

‘Getting to share life with Jake over the past decade was the honor of a lifetime,’ she penned. ‘He packed special memories into every aspect of our day. Our breathwork and coffee morning routine, his homemade chocolate chip cookies, the carousel of ever more optimized gear that he’d be tinkering with.

‘I will never forget the way he went above and beyond – often in costume – to support the objectives of his friends with equal or perhaps even more psych than he had for his own.’

She concluded: ‘Jake is remembered by me and the myriad of friends that time and distance could never separate him from. If he loved you once, he loved you forever.’

Tulare County Sheriff’s Office Coroner ruled earlier this week that Whisenant had suffered blunt force trauma after falling during the climb on Sequoia Kings Canyon.

Whisenant’s cause of death is being listed as an ‘accident.’ No further details have been revealed at this time.

Tributes have also been paid by the likes of Bailee Moore, Whisenant’s ‘lifelong friend.’ She wrote on social media : ‘It is with an impossibly heavy heart that I share the passing of my lifelong friend and confidant – Jacob Daniel Whisenant.

‘Our family is absolutely devastated by this news but find solace in the fact that Jake died doing what he loves in the beautiful Sierra Nevada.’

Her post was flooded with messages of support and condolence. ‘I spent the whole day crying,’ one said. ‘Jake was one of my favorite people in the world,’ another wrote.

‘Many of my favorite days in the mountains were with him. I so admired his strength, his grace, his thoughtfulness, and relentless optimism. Can’t believe he’s gone.’

Noah Fox, who scaled El Capitan with Whisenant in May, wrote on Instagram: ‘I had the privilege of climbing with Jake these past few months and these are memories I will cherish for the rest of my life.’

Whisenant hit the headlines in October 2024 when, alongside Brant Hysell, he took on El Capitan – the iconic summit in Yosemite National Park, which stretches 3,000ft into the sky and features the world’s tallest exposed vertical face of granite.

Whisenant and Hysell scaled the Lurking Fear route in just two hours, 55 minutes and 32 seconds.

Together they broke the previous speed record – held by Yuji Hirayama and Nick Fowler – by nearly ten minutes.

‘A truly magical day that I’ll never forget,’ Whisenant said at the time on social media. ‘We both tapped into a flow state, fully committed to our plan, and most importantly, had an absolute blast on our favorite rock.

‘We had perfect weather for a shirtless ascent and the entire route to ourselves.’

He detailed many of his adventures on Instagram and as recently as July 15, Whisenant was posting pictures from his climbs in the Sierra Nevada.

In one of Whisenant’s final social media posts, he documented a recent trip to the Kings-Kern Divide, a six-mile-long ridge in California, where he spent four days skiing, climbing and sleeping alone in ‘raw, rugged, classic High Sierra terrain.’

‘I had a truly life-enhancing experience out there, gaining confidence with each new ridge scrambled, basin traversed, and ski line descended,’ he wrote on social media at the time.

In a series of photos and videos, the 30-year-old showed off spectacular sunrises and scenery as well as his sleeping bag laid out beside a rock in the darkness.

‘By the end of my short stay, I summited [eight] 13,500+ peaks via new-to-me scrambles, and skied a fun line off each.

‘I felt sad hiking out, wishing for more time to explore and enjoy the simple mountain lifestyle.’
