The 9th Parliament’s nominee for speaker is Alban Bagbin.

The appointment of Alban Bagbin as Speaker of the 9th Parliament by President-elect John Dramani Mahama has provoked strong social media responses from Ghanaians.

A statement released on January 5, 2024, indicated that the nomination was the result of mutual agreement and deliberation between the National Democratic Congress’s (NDC) Parliamentary Leadership and National Executive.

The statement, which was signed by Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the Transition Team’s spokesperson, emphasized Bagbin’s substantial contributions and wealth of parliamentary affairs management expertise, as well as his unwavering commitment to serving the nation.

From Nadowli Member of Parliament to Minority and Majority Leader, and finally to Speaker of the 8th Parliament, Rt. Hon. Bagbin has distinguished himself in the service of Parliament.

According to the statement, “his extensive experience will be invaluable in guiding the affairs of Parliament during this pivotal juncture in Ghana’s democratic and legislative development.”

John Mahama’s trust in Alban Bagbin was reiterated in the statement, which also highlighted his capacity to foster unity and successfully carry out Parliament’s oversight duties.

It ended, “The President-elect is confident that Ghana’s Parliament will be further strengthened to effectively deliver on its oversight responsibilities under the stewardship of The Right Honourable Alban Bagbin.”

Numerous Ghanaians on X have voiced their support for Bagbin’s nomination, pointing to his wealth of experience and knowledge as the primary credentials that make him the best person to supervise and effectively lead legislative business in the next Parliament.

Some detractors, however, have voiced their disapproval of Bagbin’s nomination, contending that Doe Adjaho, a former Speaker, ought to have been chosen instead due to his party devotion and the possibility that the appointment would benefit the Volta area.
