Ghanaians are debating the relocation of the Kumasi Central Prisons, which Ashanti Regional Minister Dr. Frank Amoakohene announced would take place. The minister claims that the decision is a component of initiatives to enhance the utilization of central urban area and revitalize Kumasi. Not everyone, though, agrees that the action is solely in the public interest.

The news was warmly received by numerous social media users. They contend that the present prison occupies a prime location in the major commercial sector of Kumasi. One user commented, “It needs to be repurposed,” proposing that the facility be relocated to places like Barekese, Abofour, or Offinso where prisoners might work as farmers and support themselves.

The move was hailed by others as long overdue. One user wrote poignantly, “I’ve been praying for this for more than ten years.” A few of users also demanded that the Kumasi Zoo be moved since they feel it takes up precious area.

However, not every comment was favorable. According to some, the true goal is to make land available for commercial exploitation. One responder said frankly, “They want the land.” “They want to use the land for stores,” another person said.

The public is still split as the government gets ready to move—some are optimistic about a better urban future, while others are suspicious of covert plans.
