When Senegal’s triumphant AFCON 2025 squad returned to their respective European clubs, celebrations followed almost everywhere. From guard of honours to pre-match presentations, the Teranga Lions were warmly received after conquering Africa once again.
But at Rayo Vallecano, there was no immediate tribute for midfielder Pathé Ciss.
The absence of recognition sparked outrage among some fans, with many questioning why the Spanish side failed to honour their AFCON winner while other clubs proudly celebrated their Senegalese stars. Social media criticism quickly followed, forcing the La Liga outfit to clarify its position.
Rayo Vallecano has now explained that the decision was made out of respect, not neglect.
In an official statement, the club revealed that the planned tribute did not take place because the matchday coincided with a period of national mourning following tragic railway accidents in Adamuz and Gelida.

Players wore black armbands and a minute of silence was observed before their 3-1 defeat to Osasuna.
The club described it as inappropriate to hold any celebratory activity on such a solemn day, insisting that the decision was taken as a mark of respect for the victims and their families.
Rayo also confirmed that Pathé Ciss will receive his well-deserved recognition ahead of their next home fixture at Vallecas against Real Oviedo on Saturday, February 7, 2026.
