Ras Kuuku has expressed his ambition to secure a nomination in the Gospel category at the 2025 TGMAs.

xThe Reggae Dancehall artist revealed in an interview with DJ Slim on Hitz FM that his aspirations go beyond the “Male Vocalist of the Year” award—he is also eyeing the “Gospel Song of the Year” title.

During the conversation, DJ Slim pointed out that the Gospel category is typically reserved for gospel musicians. In response, Ras Kuuku referenced Nacee, widely recognized as both a gospel artist and a music producer.

“But Nacee is not a gospel musician. He is a producer,” Ras Kuuku argued.

DJ Slim countered, noting that Nacee has released several gospel hits and is primarily known for his work in the genre. Ras Kuuku, however, was quick to respond, saying, “But he has a lot of ‘Kwen Kwen’ (political) songs too.”

The conversation then shifted to the broader issue of genre inclusivity.

Ras Kuuku questioned why reggae and dancehall artists are often excluded from gospel award categories when musicians from other genres can win reggae and dancehall awards.

“But we, the reggae artists, don’t have the right to win Gospel Song of the Year?” he asked.

However, the TGMA board recently introduced a new category: Best Urban/Contemporary Gospel Song.

This category aims to honor the most popular gospel song that blends contemporary genres like R&B, hip-hop, and pop with traditional gospel elements. Qualified songs must be commercially released within the year under review, generated significant public excitement, and achieved widespread popularity. Additionally, it must be performed by a gospel artist.

Voted from the TGMA Academy, the Board, and the general public will be used to determine the winner.
