The Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Shippers Authority, Professor Ransford Gyampo, has publicly backed the controversial GH¢1 fuel levy, urging Ghanaians to focus on accountability rather than outright rejection of the policy.

In a recent Facebook post, Prof Gyampo emphasised that the new levy — approved on June 3 and imposed on every litre of fuel — is justifiable if it ensures transparency and directly addresses Ghana’s energy sector challenges.

“Ghanaians would prefer to pay 1 cedi fuel levy to be used to solve a problem than to pay 1 pesewa E-Levy or COVID Levy to be stolen by greedy people who also stole pensions of the aged,” he stated.

He also expressed confidence in the leadership of the Ministry of Finance, Energy, singling out its minister, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, for praise.

“Ato won’t chop the 1 cedi; he would use it,” he added.

In a follow up post, Gyampo delivered a pointed response to critics of the new policy, accusing some of them of hypocrisy and historical amnesia.

“You left an energy sector debt of almost 4 billion USD behind. Someone is putting in place measures to pay your debt to keep Ghana switched on. You are criticising without having a clue about how the problem you created must be solved,” he wrote.

The new levy is aimed at addressing debts in the energy sector and improving electricity stability, a goal the government argues is critical to long-term national development.
