The Acting Chief Executive Officer of COCOBOD, Dr Randy Abbey, has initiated legal action against the Bono Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye DC, over alleged defamatory statements.

According to a report by citinewsroom.com, the lawsuit was filed on Tuesday, August 26, 2025. Dr Abbey is demanding GH¢20 million in damages for what he describes as malicious and false claims made by Abronye during a public broadcast.

Court documents reveal that Abronye accused Dr Abbey of misusing public resources and engaging in corrupt practices at COCOBOD. Specifically, Abronye alleged that Dr Abbey transported a personal chair from Accra to cocoa farms using multiple state-owned Land Cruisers, refusing to use chairs provided by farmers.

Additionally, Abronye accused Dr Abbey of manipulating internal appointments to facilitate the embezzlement of public funds.

These statements, which were publicly broadcast and widely circulated on social media, are said to have severely damaged Dr Abbey’s reputation, exposing him to public ridicule and contempt.

In the suit, filed through COCOBOD’s Legal Department, Dr Abbey is seeking a court declaration that Abronye’s comments are defamatory. He is also demanding a full retraction and an unqualified apology to be published across all platforms where the allegations were made, as well as the removal of all defamatory content from the internet.

The lawsuit further requests general, punitive, and compensatory damages totaling GH¢20 million, a perpetual injunction restraining Abronye from making further defamatory remarks, coverage of legal costs, and any additional relief the court may deem appropriate.

Dr Abbey’s legal team stressed that the accusations are entirely baseless and aimed at undermining his professional reputation, built over years of dedicated service. They emphasised the importance of truthful and responsible public discourse, especially when it concerns individuals in positions of public trust.

As of now, Abronye DC has not publicly responded to the lawsuit.

This legal action follows a similar defamation suit filed in July 2025 by Hugh Clement A. Brown, Acting Chief Executive Officer of the Forestry Commission, who also sued Abronye for GH¢20 million over alleged defamatory remarks.
