Many female students of Northern School of Business (NOBISCO) in Tamale, the regional capital of the Northern Region, have been rendered homeless, following a rainstorm that destroyed their dormitory.
The rainstorm that hit the metropolis on Wednesday evening ripped off the roof of the girls’ dormitory, and rendered the building inhabitable.
The heavy rainstorm also destroyed properties belonging to the students worth thousands of Ghana cedis
Items destroyed by the rainstorm included books, uniforms, bags, footwear and mattresses.
The Headmaster of NOBISCO, Mr Alhassan Issah Dokurugu, in an interview with the Ghanaian Times in the school said they had converted one of the boys’ dormitories to accommodate the girls as an interim measure.
He stated that the dormitory was completely destroyed by the rainstorm and they had no option than to resort to the boys dormitory, adding “If the situation is does not improved the possibilities of we asking the students to go home is very high.”
He also stated that the school already had an infrastructure problem and the destruction of the dormitory had come to compound more of their infrastructure problems, and therefore, appealed to philanthropists to come to the aid of the school to support them put the dormitory back to its good shape.
The Senior Housemistress of the School, Mrs Andaratu Iddrisu, said she was very devastated when the students called to tell her that rainstorm had destroyed their dormitory.
“I was devastated because I know our predicament when it comes to infrastructure and my headache is where we will put the students,” she added
She also called on individuals and old students of the school to come to their aid to help them rehabilitate dormitory.
Ms Issahaku Latifa Wumpini, a house prefect of the school lamented that the students had lost most of their personal belongings, and appealed to government, individuals and organisations to come to the aid of the victims.
“Our text books and learning materials have been destroyed by the rainstorm,” she stated.
Ms Wunpini noted that currently, the students were now housed in a dormitory that they were not comfortable as female students.
She made a special appeal to the MP for the area, Mr Alhassan Suhuyin, and others, to as a matter of emergency, come to the aid of affected students.
