Sports journalist Saddick Adams has stated that the national U20 team, led by head coach Desmond Ofei, should not be satisfied with merely securing qualification for the 2025 U20 African Cup of Nations (AFCON).

He applauded the Black Satellites for their performance in reaching the finals, which automatically qualifies them for the U20 AFCON, but urged the team to aim higher.

Speaking on Angel FM, Adams called on Ofei to avoid complacency regarding the team’s qualification and to keep the focus on preparing to win the AFCON and make history.

Adams referenced the 2009 Ghana U20 team that not only won the AFCON but also went on to claim the World Cup, urging the current squad to aspire for a similar achievement.

“Look at the U20 team we had in 2009, led by coach Sellas Tetteh. We did not lose a game during the WAFU tournament and the AFCON, which helped us win the World Cup. That is Ghana,” he noted.

“Defeating Benin and others in WAFU doesn’t mean anything. We should stop the mediocrity. We commend them for qualifying, but that is not an achievement. What we would appreciate is making history,” he added.

Meanwhile, the Black Satellites have reached the finals of the WAFU Zone B U20 tournament currently ongoing in Togo and are set to face Nigeria in the finals.

With this, both Ghana and Nigeria have qualified to represent the sub-region at the 2025 U20 AFCON.

To qualify for the 2025 FIFA U20 World Cup in Chile, the Black Satellites must aim to reach at least the semi-finals of the AFCON.
