The Private Universities Founders Association (PUFA), Ghana, has praised President John Dramani Mahama and Vice-President Naana Opoku-Agyemang for granting audience to the group at Jubilee House.

In a statement signed by Dr Paul Kofi Fynn on January 24, 2026, PUFA lauded the government’s policy shift towards optional chartering of private universities, calling it a first‑of‑its‑kind move that addresses key gaps in Ghana’s tertiary education landscape.

The association hailed the high‑level engagement as vital for private sector sustainability and growth, describing the government’s proactive chartering approach as essential for bolstering the private university sector.

“This engagement marked a significant milestone for the Association and Private Universities, as it was the first time such an audience had been granted with the Vice-President of the Republic also in attendance.

“PUFA-Ghana views this high-level presence as a signal that the government recognises the sector as a vital pillar in Ghana’s educational landscape and attaches a high priority to the growth and sustainability of private universities,” the statement said.

PUFA emphasised that the policy makes education more competitive, inclusive, and aligned with global standards, fortifying Ghana’s higher education framework and said it is dedicated to working with government.

“PUFA-Ghana remains highly encouraged by the government’s openness to dialogue and its proactive approach in altering the mandatory time-bound chartering requirements for Private Universities and making the policy optional, which is essential for fostering the sustainability of the sector.

“The Association reaffirms its dedication to partnering with the government to ensure that tertiary education in Ghana remains competitive, inclusive, and aligned with global standards,” the statement concluded.
