Provisional results from the Akwatia parliamentary by-election indicate that Bernard Baidoo, the candidate of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), is on course for victory, with early tallies from polling stations placing him ahead of his main challenger, Solomon Asumadu of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Voting across the constituency’s 120 polling stations ended at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, September 2, 2025, with Electoral Commission (EC) officials now collating figures under the watch of security agencies and party representatives.

Early results suggest Baidoo is consolidating a strong lead, igniting cautious celebrations among NDC supporters stationed at key vantage points in the constituency.

The Liberal Progressive Party’s (LPP) candidate, Owusu Patrick, is trailing far behind in the three-way contest.

The by-election was triggered by the death of sitting NPP Member of Parliament Ernest Yaw Kumi, who passed away in July after a short illness.
