Media personality and show host on UTV, Yaa Konama, has called on the leadership of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to protect the party’s current 88 Members of Parliament from being contested when the party holds its next primary.
Speaking on her show, the experienced journalist stated that these MPs fought hard in the election to win and saved the NPP from an embarrassing defeat in the 2024 parliamentary election.
She contended that these MPs, who form the ‘mighty minority’ in Parliament, are keeping the government on its toes, which is why they need to be protected.
“My appeal is that those in the NPP who are lacing their boots to contest for Parliament, please allow the 88 MPs to go unopposed. If it were not for these MPs who have saved the NPP, the situation would have been very bad. Aside from this, many of the current 88 MPs have incurred a lot of debt to enter Parliament. It will be unfair to contest such MPs. One such constituency is Trobu, where a woman fought hard to win the seat for the NPP, which was on the verge of being lost.
“The NPP hierarchy should protect the 88 seats. The focus should be on some traditional seats that have been lost and others. As for the 88, they should be shielded; they fought really hard. Why change an army general who has won the battle for you? Please do well to protect the women among the 88 MPs. It is good we protect them.”
From a total of 138 MPs in the 2020 elections, the NPP suffered its worst parliamentary election defeat under the Fourth Republic, as it currently boasts only 88 MPs after the 2024 election.
