The Ghana Union of Traders Association (GUTA) has called on the government to protect Ghanaian retailers by ensuring that the local market remains safe and free from foreign dominance.

This follows ongoing tensions between Ghanaian retailers and foreign traders.

Earlier this week, the association issued a three-day ultimatum over what it described as unfair competition threatening the survival of local businesses.

The deadline, which expired on September 11, 2025, led several foreign retailers, largely Nigerians, to shut down their shops after a series of confrontations and heated exchanges.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with GhanaWeb Business on September 11, 2025, GUTA’s Vice President, Clement Boateng, stressed that it is time for government to decisively address the recurring issue.

He noted that Ghana’s retail sector is reserved for indigenous citizens, and called for strict enforcement of existing laws.

“There has been an upsurge, an increase in the number of foreigners in the retail sector. If something is not done about it, these foreigners are going to take over the market, which will not be in the interest of the citizens. There have been engagements with the Trade Ministry, and taskforces have been formed over the years,” Boateng said.
