    Professor Alidu Mahama Seidu has emerged victorious in the National Democratic Congress (NDC) primary for the Tamale Central Constituency, positioning him as the party’s candidate ahead of the by-election scheduled for September 30.

    As the Executive Secretary of the Water Resources Commission and Senior Lecturer in Political Science at the University of Ghana, Prof Seidu secured a commanding win, claiming 840 of the 1,511 total votes, far ahead of his closest rival, Abdul Hannan Gundado, who received 536 votes, while the remaining 10 contenders each polled between 3 and 44 votes.

    About Prof Seidu

    Prof Seidu brings a strong academic and policy-oriented background to the race. In addition to his current role at the Water Resources Commission (to which he was appointed by President Mahama in May 2025).

    He is a Senior Lecturer at the University of Ghana’s Political Science Department and a Research Fellow in the Centre for Asian Studies.

    His academic qualifications include a Bachelor of Arts with Honours in Political Science from the University of Ghana, where he studied from August 2000 to July 2004.

    His pursuit of advanced education took him to the United Kingdom, where he earned a Master of Science in Development Studies at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) between September 2005 and July 2006.

    Building on that foundation, Professor Alidu completed his Doctor of Philosophy at Leeds Metropolitan University, focusing on Political Science and Governance from January 2007 to July 2010

    He has held influential positions as a scholar and consultant across several African universities—including Lagos, Ibadan, Dar-es-Salaam, Nairobi, and Botswana.

    His affiliations extend to prestigious institutions and think tanks such as PASGR (Nairobi), the Centre for International Development Issues (Netherlands), IDS (Sussex), and the Varieties of Democracy Project (Sweden), as well as development partners like UNDP, Friedrich-Ebert Stiftung, and the Social Science Research Council (New York).

    He has published widely on his subject area with his papers appearing in Peace Review, Criminal Justice Studies, Transitional Justice Review, Journal of African Political Economy and Development, Contemporary Journal of African Development and Ghana Studies.
